Musical highlights Guan Yin’s traits

BACK by popular demand, Magic Mirror The Musical 2011 is all set to warm the hearts of Malaysians with its message about love and compassion.
Organised and presented by Yayasan Guan Yin, the musical depicts the magical manifestations and compassion of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, or Guan Yin, in an artistic format and play.
The musical will be staged from Nov 25 to Dec 4 at Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur.
Musical producer Datuk Tan Swee Lai said the story was about a mirror that was passed down from the Goddess of Mercy (Guan Yin).
“That special mirror is able to show our past, present and future, as well as reflect our own heart.
“Positive message: The musical is suitable for all as it promotes the universal message of love.”
“The musical reveals how Guan Yin, through the values of love, compassion and wisdom, guides people to overcome problems. Its message also advocates a caring and sharing society,” Tan said.
While Guan Yin does not appear in any form or shape, it is a belief that Guan Yin takes on many different roles and appearances to deal with varied situations and the diverse group of people surrounding them to provide guidance to all beings.
Describing the show as a wonderful artistic union between Malaysia and China, Tan said the musical was a collaboration of talented professionals with cast and crew hailing from both countries.
“About half the musical’s dancers are Malaysians, while the other half come from the renowned Beijing Dance Academy,” said Tan, who is also the musical’s creative director and art director.
“The show is set in the Tang Dynasty, which had a rich and colourful culture.”
The musical was first staged in 2008 at the Genting Highland International Ballroom, with all 10 shows being sold-out events.
“Local talent Regine Tai will resume her role as Guan Yin. We also managed to rope in Chinese dancer/choreographer Professor Yu Xiao Xue and Malaysian music composer/songwriter Chow Kam Leong who, like the previous musical, will serve as musical director/ choreographer, music director and playwright.
“In addition to designing the musical’s stage, Chinese stage designer and engineer Ren Dong Sheng will be helping to design and present an array of rich and innovative costumes for all the cast.”
Tan said the production would be using the facilities at Istana Budaya, such as the stage, to present an amazing experience of music, dance and drama to the audience.
The RM2mil show will be conducted in Mandarin with English subtitles.
Tan said everyone would be able to enjoy the show.
“Viewers will also gain some understanding about love and compassion. We have several children as part of the cast members who are sure to appeal to the audience.”
Tan added that the show was suitable for all Malaysians, as it promoted the universal message of love and understanding for all humankind.
Tickets are priced at RM100, RM150, RM220 and RM300.
